My students need a variety of classroom and art supplies to actively participate and become engaged in science and art lessons and projects!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. M.'s classroom raised $465
This project is fully funded
My Students
As an all-girls high school, we have the unique opportunity to encourage our girls to engage in scientific studies and increase their scientific literacy in and outside of the classroom. Our girls deserve to be exposed to engaging artistic activities-please help us to reach that goal!
The student body at our urban high school is approximately 1100 (in grades 9-12).
We are an all girls (special admission) high school with the following demographics: 63% African American, 11% Caucasian, 17% Asian, and 8% Hispanic. As a special admission school, our girls enter with excellent recommendations from their feeder schools. Our school is rich with tradition, and boosts several sports and clubs. However, more than 85% of our students are at or below poverty level. As such, it is very difficult for our students to get the technology and resources they need to be successful. We try to encourage a strong sisterhood in our building so that our girls feel like they are part of a bigger family unit. We are dedicated to exposing our students to every educational opportunity possible and preparing them for college and beyond.
My Project
Some of my classes current and upcoming activities/projects include: 1. Using whiteboards to encourage student involvement in our genetics unit (so we can use the markers as soon as possible) 2. We will be making 2D DNA models next, so we need: pencils, glue, colored pencils and construction paper, etc. 3. We will be making evolution storybooks (biology & environmental science) very shortly, as well. I am requesting these supplies because, our departmental budget does not allow for artistic activities. I prefer to do at least one creative (hands-on) activity/project per quarter, to engage all students, especially those who are visual and tactile learners. My students are very excited about these activities! In addition to the ideas mentioned here, I also encourage the students to creatively illustrate many diagrams. These projects help my students to have hands-on opportunities to explore various biological and environmental science concepts in our classroom!
My students will benefit from this donation because this project and many others will help them to access information outside of our normal curriculum.
Many of our girls report that they are not "good" at science or that the topics are not interesting; however, doing hands on activities, in conjunction with labs and other instruction, gives them more opportunities to master the subject area.
