Art History Gets Real: People Have Always Made Art!

My students need to connect their art making to the world of art. Art posters will inform my students how humankind has made art since the beginning of history.

My Students

Ours is a public magnet school. Students travel from all over town to attend our school. We are not without our struggles, especially when it comes to the school budget. Eighty-two percent qualify for free lunches. Despite everything, though, our students achieve. Over 90% go onto college; 10% get full scholarships to college. Our students are diverse and revel in their differences. Groups of friends are multicultural. They are engaged and very bright. These great kids give me hope for the future. Teaching my students is so rewarding. I strive to help them become more creative.

Students at my school come from poor and working class families.

Many have never been to an art museum. Introducing my students to art history is an exciting time because they learn how human beings just like them have made art from the beginning of human kind. That blows their minds. Then, they find out that people still make art. And, art is made by every culture. With this knowledge, my students join the tradition of art-making. Art history is about all of us. Art history tells every human story and that is exciting!

My Project

Art is made by every culture today and every culture from the past. The posters I request will bring a wide range of artworks for study by my bright and creative students. When students learn how the earliest humans expressed their creativity much like we do today, students connect to a tradition that's over 40,000 years old.

Art breathes life to the past.

When these visual resources are posted in the classroom, students will engage the images, using them as learning tools. A picture is worth 1,000 words and the posters I request will put vibrant images of important artworks in front of my students. These posters will be displayed for class discussions and student sketching.

Through the study of art history, using these posters, my students will learn how art is made and what artists expressed long ago and today. Students learn about composition of images and how color is used when they look at art. They will learn to see the elements and principles of art as relevant in art class. Students see how artists use many methods and media to express themselves. This collection of artworks will broaden the spectrum of art for my students. Students learn skills from the artists we study, just as apprentices did in the past. Students will also see that their voices are important as they make art inspired by the posters we use. These posters will be used year after year as a great tool to help all my students learn art history. This collection of artwork will bring a world of art into our classroom.
