This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am currently a third-grade teacher to amazing students in a low-income community. I have the same students from last year because I was given the opportunity to loop with them. I am so thankful for that. Aside from being in the Class Champions and Coyotes Reading program, they are students that strive to be their best selves each day.
My students set high standards for themselves and push themselves to be their very best each day.
We are an extremely close classroom with much to celebrate.
My Project
Mental health is the most important aspect of teaching that I focus on this year; we are seeing adverse behaviors and students with various needs in the classroom that are related to behavior. I have created a Calm Corner that students visit when they need to step away for a few minutes. This corner is filled with sensory items, flexible seating and books about emotions. I am seeking art materials for them to use in this area that they will find appealing; sketchbooks, doodle pads and smelly pencils. I know that art promotes positive emotions and I feel these materials will help my students feel prepared to regulate emotions and learn in school.
