My Students

I teach at an elementary school in Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are "disadvantaged" due to economic backgrounds.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things!

Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum, because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited.

My Project

Common core standards and high stakes assessments have shifted our education to focus on mainly teaching ELA and Math curriculum. But what about the Arts?! Art is FUN! Children love to draw, color, paint, build, dance and sing!

The importance of Art (visual and performing) are CRITICAL components to nurturing the WHOLE CHILD!

Art has many benefits for children such as promoting creativity, increasing self confidence and improving academic performance.

My goal is to embed more art activities into my weekly teaching. The materials that I am requesting will be used for various art projects throughout the school year by my second grade students. One of our art projects constructed strictly in school is our habitat trioramas. Students can use the oil pastels, foam sheets, pipe cleaners, air dry clay, paint, pom poms, scissors and glue sticks to help build their trioramas. These basic art supplies are much needed and will be well used and appreciated for many years to come!
