My students need art materials such as water colors, clay and pastels that will allow them to find their inner artist.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are constantly being told there is no time for art. In my classroom, we make time! Many students struggle with basic concepts such as reading and math. But these same students when given a paint brush or a bit of clay, they shine.
My school is very diverse both racially and economically.
We have students whose parents are doctors and lawyers and students whose parents clean houses or work in construction. At one time, we were a title 1 school which afforded us a little bit of extra money to spend on students' needs. However a change in the funding formula, took this money away but didn't take away the need! Our school has a very active and inclusive parent and community base which are unique to our school. We are also one of a few public schools in our area to offer a dual immersion program (Spanish/English) through High School.
My Project
Art is something you have to make happen in the classroom these days because the prescribed curriculum just doesn't leave time for it. I dedicate one afternoon per week to art. We start by exploring lines and points on the paper. We progress to using primary colors and exploring what we know about them and how we can make more colors. From there we learn about different medium such as pastels, water colors and clay. We also spend time learning about different artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. We try activities that reflect the work done by those artists. By the end of the year, each student has a sizable portfolio to take home and treasure. The materials I am asking for will help make this possible.
Students need art just like they need music and math and language arts.
Many students who would otherwise be under-served, come to life when they are given the opportunity to work with quality art materials from a variety of different medium. I am hoping my students will gain a basic understanding of different kinds of art and learn how art can affect them in many ways.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
