Art Gives Hope

My students need art supplies including 12 colors of ink, a collage kit, and foam pieces.

I teach elementary aged students in a high poverty school community. Our students have so much to offer the world! We have a culturally diverse student body with twenty different languages spoken.

Unfortunately, while low resourced schools need the most help, often times we cannot afford teachers in such important areas as art. Art is life, and our students must experience interacting with their world in a creative way. Our children need to express themselves through more than what is available to them, which is often a sense of hopelessness. Our students need literacy and math skills, but also need art to liberate themselves from poverty and gain the confidence necessary to succeed in life!

We need basic art supplies. We do, however, also request print making materials. While one of the easier artistic endeavors to begin, print making has a tremendous impact and is a powerful tool. Any art supply outside of scissors, paper and glue must be purchased by teachers. We have some teachers who will regularly purchase $100.00 out-of-pocket on supplies per month.

Your help will ensure the continued support of the arts for the children and also send a message that art is important to our childrens future. We must help our students discover themselves through art, create for themselves and others, share their voice. Without a sense of positive self, our children will perpetuate the cycle of hopelessness. Simply stated: art gives hope.
