Art for Creative Self Expression and Self Regulation

My Students
My students are creative and artistic and learn best through a hands on, tactile approach to learning. Many of my students have developmental and/or cognitive disabilities. They may struggle to grasp academic concepts and their self esteem may suffer. Art is both something they can excel in and thereby boost their confidence, as well as a method to self regulate and cope with their emotions.
My Project
Our students love exploring new art materials and techniques, as well as using familiar materials differently. Drawing and painting activities such as mixing and blending colors help students chose the right color scheme to express themselves when their words fail them, a skill we continue to practice in conjunction with Speech Therapy. For many of our students, self expression, along with many verbal based skills, is a difficult concept. Many of our students connect to the world around them through pictures or other visuals. As educators, we learn that no two students learn the same. That holds true for our students who have various types of disabilities. Our students sometimes struggle to be heard or to express themselves effectively and thus become frustrated. Lessons that introduce new materials such as clay will help students to use their hands to throw and squeeze in a productive and creative way, thus helping to self regulate their frustrations or other negative feelings they may have.
