Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an urban district where the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. I have a regular education classroom that includes ESL students, Special Education students, and students from a variety of demographic backgrounds.

My students come to school every day ready to learn and eager to be engaged.

They put forth their best effort every day and are active participants in their own learning. I am continually looking for new ways to keep them invested in their education.

My Project

I want to create an educational environment where my students can experience art every day. Using an aesthetic immersion model, I hope to teach them to access their understanding of art to enhance their learning. Using musical instruments or art materials such as paint will provide students with a variety of creative opportunities to show mastery of content area curriculum. Using the shakers, rhythm sticks, and drums, perform songs that they have written based on the reading assignments, or even math concepts. The paint and paper will allow students to illustrate events in a book in a creative way, demonstrating their knowledge in noor even combine the two disciplines - all while learning academic vocabulary, building community, and becoming critical thinkers. Art integration increases student engagement and achievement, and every student deserves the chance to experience art in all its forms as often as possible.

Organic exposure to visual art and music helps students become divergent thinkers who use all their senses to engage with the information that they need to master in all content areas.

By experimenting regularly with a variety of artistic mediums, my students will have more opportunities to notice the world around them, and to use those connections to better understand complex academic information.
