My Project
My students need the arts to express themselves creatively. We are a unique school with many students attending from different countries, a majority of them refugees learning a new language for the first time. Art has been an amazing space for our new students as art is a universal language where they thrive. My Gifted and Talented students need specialty supplies to reach their goals in art.
Furthermore, our local population is majority low-income, high needs, and many coming to school with a high level of trauma.
Art is a proven way to help students calm down, center themselves, and express built up emotions. With my background in psychology and experience working with high trauma populations, I weave expressive arts and SEL throughout my curriculum.
Whether it is through painting, pottery, sculpture or something else that catches their interest, the arts are essential to my students’ well being and allows for an opportunity to soothe emotions and use their creativity to express their voice. However as a Title I school, without a PTA, we do not have the funding capabilities necessary to cover all of the art supplies that the children deserve.
Students at our school have not had art for a few years before I came in 2019. Next, we were interrupted with virtual learning because of Covid. Now that we are back in person for our second year, I am excited to again begin to build a strong arts program. We are in need of specific supplies that exceed my small art budget. Specialty drawing supplies, sharpeners, and higher level colored pencils are needed to complete our amazing portfolios! More than ever, the arts are essential for students’ mental health.
