My Students
I have seven students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills, and the majority are working on learning basic skills as well as communication and social skills.
We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.
We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day, independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered, group time to work on academic skills and writing, story time to work on comprehension, math, science, and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.
My Project
In our classroom we do a variety of art activities that tie into themes we are learning about each month. Many of the art activities have picture directions that students look at and use to create works of art. We have made so many art projects using construction paper and students have been improving on fine motor skills, communication skills, and following directions while connecting concepts we are learning about.
My students love creating works of art and putting their art on display in the hallway.
They pick the spot on our board where their art is hung to display. It has become a favorite activity after they create their art projects. We use a lot of construction paper and glue to create art projects, and those supplies will help us make art projects for the whole school year. An example of an art project we have done is in learning about penguins students glued pieces of already cut construction paper to make a penguin and then labeled the parts of a penguin.
My students are also all learning how to write. Most of my students write with markers because it's easier to hold and easier to see. They are still working on fine motor control so they often write very light with a pencil which makes it hard to see what they can actually do. We have also gone through most of our scissors recently because my students are cutting more without help. They have worked so hard in improving fine motor control with cutting, writing, and gluing pieces together to create works of art and I can't wait to continue to see more progress!
