My Students

Do you recall your first encounter with art? Was it in kindergarten while using finger paints? Was it an age when you were free to express yourself without a care in the world? My students are at that age and in dire need of learning to express themselves. In a school society where language arts and math rule the school time, students need to learn about other things such as art. My students will learn through the technique of integration. I will integrate the arts into language arts with the art books. Their learning experiences will be enhanced through art images. Then they will begin to understand the meaning of beauty. They will understand that an artistic eye can show things in a different way. They will grow as individuals and as artists. My students will learn to express themselves artistically while taking a literature adventure in time learning about Edgar Degas, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Pop artists.

I teach first graders who are eager to learn, are inquisitive, and interesting.

Even with their limitation at home my students arrive happy and eager to learn new things on a daily basis. My students come from disadvantaged backgrounds both in terms of economic and personal struggles. In addition to their socioeconomic disadvantages many of my students have a language barrier. Our school is one of the oldest schools in the region; therefore field trips are not a possibility. These students are continually growing up with limited resources and I hope to assist them by integrating the arts into my teaching and bringing in additional resources that will allow them to grow and learn in the classroom. They are hindered enough in life that I want to provide them with advantages in the classroom that will let them feel empowered and strengthen their knowledge for the future.

My Project

"Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand" -€Â"Chinese Proverb. Art is a rich part of our history. Some of the smartest and innovative people of the past were artists. I want to not just tell my students about artists I want them to be submerged in their world. I am requesting two art books that have lessons about many artists and two children'€™s books about two famous artists. In addition to the books, I am requesting images of Pop Art and an image of, "€œThe Mona Lisa."€ The art lessons that I will be able to provide my students with will have a great impact on their inquisitive minds. My first graders have limitations at home and I do not want this to be the case at school. Our school is in the desert and we are far away from a metropolitan city, museum or zoo. With your support I will be able to provide my students with pseudo art museum visits by using the images. In an instant my class can travel across the world to Paris where the Mona Lisa resides by showing them her image. I can take them to New York and show them Modern Art through the Roy Lichtenstein images or the Jackson Pollock images. I will be given the opportunity to expose my first graders to things that otherwise they may never have a chance to experience.

As a teacher I serve as a guide and teach by example.

I guide my students and help build a foundation for the future. I want to ensure that I help them build a solid foundation that will not just gain them confidence in their academics, but also enrich them personally. The future relies on students understanding what influence the past has on the future. I want to be the one to introduce them to the great artists of the past.
