This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I want to learn. The rain can't stop me," said one of our many eager students who just arrived from Guatemala. He had no jacket or rain gear on that cold rainy day. He didn't care. He wants to learn, and he will learn very fast with an infusion of art in his studies. That's what I want to give him.
Our students attend a small, urban, well-loved public elementary school that has been in this community for many years.
Students come from many parts of the world and arrive on our doorstep, sometimes with very little schooling at all and not speaking English. Some of them are refugees. Some others are traumatized by inner-city life. We dedicate ourselves to providing them the best we can in our Spanish-English bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient, and culturally aware life-long learners. They are an inquisitive, lively group of students who work hard on academic subjects. However, many of them often feel a bit lost and alone in a strange difficult world. I hope to empower these wonderful students with art. We will value their families' and other families’ cultural backgrounds through art. We hope to help all of them to a bright future ahead.
My Project
With high quality markers and real watercolor paper, my students will be able to create works of art that reflect their cultural backgrounds and the cultural backgrounds of their fellow students. We will draw animals in the style of the Alebrijes, brightly colored fantastical creatures that originated in Mexico. In our marker drawings and watercolor works, we will imitate the vibrant weaving of Guatemalan villagers. We will also explore the Kente cloth colors from western Africa. All of this artwork will help students appreciate many different cultures by looking at their similarities, their beautiful colors, and patterns.
Through the kind of artwork I will teach with your donated supplies, the refugee children and all the students will be empowered to honor their families and their cultures.
Art can also be a way of healing. I hope these projects will help the students to heal from the traumas they have experienced and be better prepared to take on all the challenges of learning a new language and a new world. Your donation can make this possible.
