Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.

My Project

My students are passionate about the environment and it shows in their class work, curiosity and inquisitiveness about the issues we explore in class: desertification, population, poverty, migration, water and food scarcity and nature in general. And while we have every scientific perspective available at our fingertips through net access on our Chromebooks as well as textbook and science journal use, what we lack is an artistic, visual, photographic, fine arts perspective for the environmental issues of our time. In class, we always reference pop culture in our conversations and engage in stimulating ideas around cinema, art, nature and the nature of science. My students love movies, yet they lack the discerning analysis that comes from connecting the science, fiction and the art of movie making.

I hope this project will give the students exposure so that the students can unpack classic imagery and making of stories around some of our most discussed and referenced titles in our class-Star Wars, Alien and Indiana Jones!

The power of photography and cinema as a documentary form is underrated in the modern classroom as a link to engage students in conversations that come back to science and science concepts. In particular, my Academic Decathlon course/team is always fascinated by the links between science fiction and cinema and the science we explore in class- also next year's Academic Decathlon topic is revolving around the Space Race and Cold War. Lastly, we discuss issues of environmental science and we almost never discuss the power of the arts and in particular the photographic/cinematic medium that has marked the environmental movement as of late (Avatar as a metaphor anyone?). It's time we make a bit of a change and give students a chance to explore the power of photography and cinema in a scientific context.
