This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I'm a new special education teacher supporting our students with disabilities in a Spanish Dual Language ICT Kindergarten Classroom in Red Hook, Brooklyn. I work for a Title I school, which means the majority of our students (about 79%) are economically disadvantaged and come from marginalized communities.
Most of our students come from the neighboring public housing developments, the largest in Brooklyn.
Our school faces a unique challenge due to its geographic location. The nearest subway is a 20-minute walk away, and the only public transportation methods are buses or the New York City ferry, which many of our students do not take. This isolation from the rest of Brooklyn and NYC poses a significant barrier to our students' access to educational resources and opportunities.
I am requesting to fund a new art center filled in our new kindergarten ICT dual language-Spanish programs
My students have physical differences that make it hard to hold art materials, and they need access to a range of different materials and flexible seating in order to explore. This art center, which will include two specialty tables- a small round table and an art table with a large storage and supply organizer, will help create a space where students with disabilities can go do a craft or an art project that will support their independence while providing a place for enthusiasm and the ability to overcome challenges through art expression. Without this art center, our students are limited in what they can achieve through artistic expression. I want to provide my students with a beautiful space to open the world of creativity and joy and open the world to them through art.
