Art Bucks Incentive Supplies

Help me give my students the supplies they need to trade in their "Art Bucks" as a PBIS Incentive to create, sketch, mold, design, paint. They will follow the art room rules and be rewarded with choices!

My Students

My students in grades PK-5 are a diverse and energetic mix of kids from various ethnic groups. Our school community is located in a low socioeconomic area of south NY. There aren’t many places for kids to experience art. Many of our students are ENL, special needs or new immigrants. The families of these students lack the means to take advantage of the art culture in NYC, elements and principles of art.

Many of the parents work more than one job and/or speak English.

This makes it hard for them to take their children to museums, explore the internet, book signings or meet and greets for authors or artists to build question and discussion in for culture and experiences that will last a lifetime.

My Project

We are requesting play-doh, oil pastels, tracing paper and markers. With the beginning of the school year comes excitement, anxiety, and a yearning for wanting order as soon as possible. While classroom and behavior management differs greatly in our school and cluster settings, it is an essential component to running a successful learning environment in an Art room with thriving students.

The best way to motivate student behavior is to provide an incentive or reward for that motivation.

Kids come to the art room because it is fun, safe and they learn through a multi-sensory approach with rubrics, quotes, videos, music, art techniques and hands-on projects.

"Art Bucks" is a very simple student controlled reward that highlights positive behavior or action in class and give kids an incentive to have a creative outlet. If I observe a desired behavior from a student,(answering questions, being creative, sharing supplies, being global in class, the student receives "Art Bucks". It is very similar to “Caught Doing Good.” The students collect the money for special events and privileges (incentives) that have a determined value (dollar amount) and then are able to pick one art period option from the incentive poster hanging in the room.
