ART: Bridging the Gap Between Cultures

My Students

Students at our school in Stratford, CT come from a very wide range of cultural backgrounds. The diversity of cultures is one of the most beautiful things about our school because it gives me a unique opportunity to learn from my students as well as have my students learn from each other. There are over 40 different languages spoken by our students in the high school alone. In the art classroom, my students range from grades 9-12. Half of the students that attend our school come from low-income families. During art class, many conversations come up between my students- discussions about what life is like in other countries, students teaching each other words in their own languages, and sometimes political discussions where stereotypes can be put to an end when students have the opportunity to get to know each other.

My Project

It is my hope to build up the art programs offered at our school in order to allow more students the opportunity to take part in these courses and to allow a wider range of courses offered to students. In particular, I hope to get a new course up and running in the next school year or so that will have a specific focus on cultural art from around the world. The curriculum is already written, students are already being told about it, but we need to start organizing the tools and equipment that would be necessary to run the course and to expand the project opportunities for art courses that are already available to students. The tools and equipment that are being requested on this site are some of the basics that we need to get this program up and running as well as expand project possibilities in our other, existing courses. The drill, drill bits and vice grip will aid us in incorporating the use of metal and metal working into the classroom, something students have shown a lot of interest in learning about more. When we are able to get the new courses up and running, I hope to incorporate more metal work and jewelry making into the curriculum by studying Southwestern jewelry smithing and Andean and Middle Eastern metalwork along with small wood working projects based on works of art from various parts of Africa as well- all things that would benefit from having a drilling tool in the classroom.
