This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students, and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home.
These students are 11 and 12-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging, and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
They are in uniform, and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small, and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My Project
This project is about getting several children's book written about art so students can read them and look at the illustrations. They will also be learning about art in the community, art techniques and artists. Bookmaking is a unit we do in the art room every year and there has not been examples in the classroom for students to look at and read. This is a title one school with many students who are not up to grade level in reading or cannot read English and need more practice.
If we have colorful, beautifully illustrated books in the art room, about a subject students love, art then it will go along way to improving students reading skills and support learning in their other classes.
Books, books about art in the art room will support students development in their other classes as well as learning about writing and illustration so they can create their own books.
The art classes do community service by making books for high poverty preschools. The art classes just finished making board books for the local preschool and the next time we do this project, students will have actual books as examples to look at in the classroom.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
