Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten and ESL at a Title one school in New Mexico, serving an underprivileged population of students in a high-need community. I have 20 very sweet, eager to learn little five and six year olds.

Budget cuts this year and the negative impact of the No Child Left Behind Act have made art education in public schools almost obsolete. Students at my school get art classes every other year, and only every other week for an hour, which is simply not enough! I am working very hard to accumulate a variety of art supplies on Donorschoose.org to ensure that authentic, open-ended, art experiences for my Kindergarten students are provided on a daily basis. It is very important that an art education prefaces the use of these art supplies. Unfortunately I am allotted no funds to purchase books or materials, and really need some art books to use in my classroom to back up our art experiments! Many of my students have little or no experience with great works of art and these books are essential.

Having art books about world renowned artists, art styles and art strategies will make my students aware of the styles of art and the history of art. They will be inspired by artists from around the world, and get to see examples of masterpieces. The art education will help students apply their knowledge into their own creative art adventures. All children are successful at art, which is why it is so important that they are creating art and learning about it!
