Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a kindergarten teacher at Tenderloin Elementary School In San Francisco. I have a B.F.A. in fine arts and a Multi-subject teaching credential and I am currently the Arts Coordinator for our school. Because of my background I recognize a strong correlation between learning academic material and the arts. The populations our school serves are largely English second language learners. I am convinced that for these children (as well as my native English speakers ) expression and acquisition of knowledge through music and art is an exciting way for them to learn. In addition the arts provide a viable form of assessment and a means of support and enrichment to standard curriculum. I would like to purchase some music CD's and some materials for printmaking in the classroom. The CD's would be used for learning basic concepts in math and Language Arts as well as social and proximity issues. In kindergarten we use music for morning circle when introducing ideas about how to treat each other, rules, how we are alike and not alike, and ways to get along. We also use music for our daily morning calendar (songs about the day,month, seasons and holidays). In math we use music to introduce beginning concepts such as shapes, number, size, and pattern. In language arts we use music to make phonics and conventions of print and language fun and easy to learn. We use music to demonstrate simple concepts about color, right and left, up and down, next to,under, over and so on. Singing and music are a joyful event for kindergarten students. By singing they can learn material and enjoy self-expression through song. The print making materials would be used first to teach basic printmaking and secondly to demonstrate knowledge in science. Specifically, I plan to use these materials toward the end of this year to enrich a unit on honeybees that I teach. The unit covers parts of a bee, different kinds of bees in a hive , the hive itself, metamorphosis of a honey bee, and the life of a bee. I would like my students to be able to illustrate what they have learned about bees in printmaking. After that I plan on using this medium (printmaking) to demonstrate knowledge about any of the science units that we teach in kindergarten, Twenty students could use these materials at a time and they will be able to be used by future students year after year. I am dedicated to creativity in my class and believe that my students enjoy and benefit academically from creative learning experiences.
