it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back to your childhood . . . there is nothing like a brand new box of crayons. New art supplies and special art paper hold endless possibilities. Unfortunately in our class we share art supplies I inherited from another teacher over 10 years ago.
Our school is a very unique Title 1 K-5 public elementary school in the state of California, where education budgets have been severely slashed during recent years.
My students face daily adversity due to poverty, split families, acquiring English, etc., yet all of that vanishes when they walk through the door of my classroom. My kids are here to learn! As part of our special program, students commit to attending school for an extra hour each day, and see education as a way to better themselves, and their families, in the future. They are the hardest working students around, and despite the challenges they face at home, each student knows they are college bound, with bright futures ahead.
My Project
Imagine, if you will, sitting at a table with 4 of your classmates, all of you sharing 1 pack of oil pastels. Needless to say, when you ask five nine year olds to share anything, sparks often fly, especially when the students are tasked to create their image of the solar system, and everyone is fighting for black, blue, and green. I fully believe that art is a necessity in every classroom. My students are frequently asked to complete various art projects to supplement their learning. Unfortunately the days of having an art teacher, or budget for art supplies are long gone. I have some amazing art projects planned for our class (and our parents love the results), but our art supplies are on their last legs . . . please help out our sorry art situation!
Art is a critical part of child development.
It fosters creative thinking at its finest, and is an outlet for so many children. Art is another way that some kids can "show what they know". Our art situation is not good. . . it's actually horrible. I am a good art teacher, and my lessons engage all students in learning. I inherited most of my art supplies from teachers over 10 years ago. We have almost used them up, and could really, really use a refresh to help us with our learning.
