Art and Science: Integrating Interesting Projects!

My students need various art supplies, including watercolor pencils and sketch boards and science experiments, including owl pellet kits and root-vue farms.

My Students

Do you remember the quiet creativity you felt when making a painting in art class? How about the magical feeling when you saw a butterfly come out of its cocoon for the first time? My students and I would love to combine these two experiences, art and science, into several projects during the year.

My students are in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade at a public school in Illinois.

They are full of life, energetic, creative, and ready for new experiences and lessons. The students currently receive one 45-minute class of art and one class of science per week. It is wonderful that they get these experiences, but I really wish they had more time to study each subject. The students live in an urban community, and so they have little experience with the life cycle of plants and animals. Studying various experiments during their school days would be so exciting for them! The students are like sponges at this age - ready for new information and just waiting to learn interesting ideas!

My Project

My students need various art supplies and science experiments so we will be able to do integrated art and science lessons. With the resources I am asking for, we would be able to complete three exciting units integrating Science and Fine Arts. Hopefully, we would be able to complete a Butterfly Unit, Gardening Unit, and Owl Unit. With the Butterfly Unit, we would make beautiful watercolor paintings of butterflies and at the same time, watch the butterflies make their transformation from caterpillar to butterfly in a butterfly habitat. Imagine how fun that would be for the students! For the Gardening Unit, we would plant vegetables and flowers in the Root-Vue container and then make various paintings and drawings along the way, noticing all the details above and under the ground! During our Owl Unit, we would make wonderful and detailed oil pastel drawings of owls, and then dissect owl pellets and piece together the skeletons to learn even more about the life of an owl. All three of these units would be exciting and connect the sciences and arts in interesting ways for the students.

Providing connections between various subject matters is a great way to give students interesting and valuable learning experiences.

At a time when so much of the focus is on standardized testing, wouldn't it be exciting for them to create several hands-on art projects and science experiments? These units are lessons that teach more than facts to the students. These units would involve observation, patience, and creativity. Please help provide these educationally rich lessons to my students!
