Art and Photography Care Packages for Students with Disabilities
Help me give my students materials to assemble care packages of community donations and my prior successfully funded Donor's Choose project. Some of my students require packages to be mailed rather than dropped off in-person.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Sara's classroom raised $303

My Students
Life in isolation has long been a social issue for students with disabilities. Physical, behavioral, or sensory needs have limited the interaction with society. Students at my school have experienced what all of New York state is currently going through during the Covid-19 pandemic. For much of the 2019-2020 school year, the photography classes have been preparing for class trips and off-site experiences by learning camera operations and practicing through the windows, in the halls and in the schoolyard of the school. The course steered off direction when Governor Cuomo announced a shelter-in place for our state. While many of us adjust to our new lifestyle of social distancing, my students in the New York City Department of Education have something to share from their lifetime of experience. Their photography visually translates and defines what life at home is during this public health crisis. What’s discovered is just the opposite of what educators worried – transition. This remote learning project reveals that life without timed schedule, daily transitioning to and from school and a new system of evaluation presents opportunities for building connections with family and online community.
My Project
These materials are for assembly of items that have already been collected from community donations and my previous successfully funded care packages. The prior Donors Choose project grants the kids Sunprint paper so that they can tell their quarantine story at home through photography. The items in this project will allow the staff to assemble care pages containing the Sunprint paper in addition to items donated by the community such as crayons, colored pencils, coloring books and paper for them to create a final end of year artwork project.
The items included in this project will facilitate care packages to be sent via USPS to be received in their homes.
The paper and ink will be used to create personalized letters to the kids. These are kids who have challenges from their financial situations in addition to their various disabilities. Receiving these care packages will enrich their educational experience at home.
