My Project
Our SPED Inclusion Kindergarten classroom is home to students with a large variety of talents and challenges. Students have various physical and academic challenges, but have an opportunity to work together with seat cushions they can use at our low, large rear table in small groups that allow them to sit on the floor and get a break from the chairs. They are small and need to move! As our school does not offer any music class, I do all I can to incorporate music, we sing, we dance and I want the kids to have an opportunity to learn music - thus the color coded handbells! This also gives them an opportunity to see the importance of teamwork and the possibility of what they can do when they work together - putting an emphasis on the relationship skills aspect of our SEL curriculum.
My goals for this project are to promote and reward good behavior in the classroom (shape hole punches for their "punchcards"), provide resources they can use to solve problems independently (name plates) and to provide creative venues to express themselves and share their talents artistically and musically at a school that does not have the good fortune of having such programs school-wide.
I hope to create a sense of acceptance and community among my students where we can identify their strengths and expand that confidence into academic and social and emotional learning.
