My Students
My class is composed of an inspiring group of 32 4th graders. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. We also have several students with independent education plans to accommodate their special needs, as well as several English language learners, and students with diagnosed ADHD.
My students come to school every day bursting with a desire to talk, listen and learn.
In writing, they share stories of their family and friends. In math, we work together to fine tune strategies for solving some really hard problems. During reading, you will find the students working in groups, or gathered in a large circle to discuss big ideas and themes in our literature. Conversation and interaction drive our learning and our day. Yes, they can, and do, work independently and with focus when necessary, but even these periods hum with an energy unique to nine year olds.
My Project
We need pastels and other supplies to update the tattered ones in our art cabinet, and allow the students to express themselves in their art journals.
We love to gather on the carpet for a shared reading of a good novel, but our texts are out of date and the pages are falling out!
The class sets of the three novels I have selected are proven favorites by some of our most cherished authors. I cannot wait to turn our pages simultaneously as we immerse ourselves in the rich storytelling of Spinelli, Di Millo, and Applegate. At the end of each shared reading there is a collective sigh of pleasure in our class. Reading a shared texts gives us a common experience to refer to during mini-lessons in our reading workshop periods.
