My Students

In the Arkansas Delta, many of my students do not have the opportunity to experience new things; it is not only my duty to teach them the rules of grammar and the literary canon, but to expand their horizons. Books like Persepolis are a gateway to understanding ourselves and the world we live in.

My students are some of the most enthusiastic and wonderful kids you could ever hope to teach, but live in a region of the state, the Arkansas Delta, where the mechanization of agriculture has led to fewer and fewer jobs.

As employment and population declines, so do resources available to students. I can't ask my students to purchase their own books; many come from homes where buying basic school supplies is a struggle. But our district struggles just as much to provide for its students, and unfortunately this year there is no room in our budget to add a new set of books to the Literacy program.

My Project

These copies of Persepolis will provide a multi-modal learning experience to my students, while improving vertical alignment between grade levels; these books will continue the memoir-based unit I taught last year with 9th graders, using the text I Am Malala, and will expose students to the literary genre of Graphic Novels, often neglected in the English Language Arts/Literacy classroom. The images of the novel will help engage reluctant readers and help them to visualize the story, while the deeply personal and relatable narrative of the author, Marjane Satrapi, will interest readers of all levels. The books, which follow the life of Satrapi as she grows up in Iran in the 1970's, flees during the Islamic Revolution, and later returns as an adult, allow students to reflect on topics like growing up, rejection, and being an individual in a society that demands conformity. The book has also been adapted into film, which gives auditory and visual students another way to engage.

This set of Persepolis will expose students to a tradition that dates back centuries in literature: the combination of art and the written word.

But unlike storied works such as Blake's Songs of Innocence/Experience, Persepolis is accessible to all of them, regardless of their reading level. It is a story about the difficulties of growing up, individuality, doubt, and triumph.
