Art and Literacy: An Art Room Library!

My students need a variety of art-based books for the art room library. These include 2 of the Peter Reynolds Creatrilogy Boxed Sets, 2 copies of "The Day the Crayons Quit" and 2 copies of "Press Here."

My Students

The art curriculum is more than just making projects. Incorporating reading helps to enhance student learning in art by combining language with the visual. With an art room library, students can create art inspired by stories, either by illustration or imaginative projects.

My students are a lively bunch!

I teach at two schools, and I love to see them every week. Our school district is over 70% low income with a diverse community. Many students transfer in during the year from different schools, states, or even countries with little to no experience with art. We teach respect and responsibility in our district, and the students demonstrate their pride in their school in all classes, including my art rooms.

My Project

The books I am requesting are related to the visual arts and would help to build a great library in the art room. The books requested share stories of creativity, responsibility, and the importance of accepting mistakes and working with them. Students love to use the books I currently have in my library for their own reading and drawing time. SInce our district has started using the Language Arts common core standards, I am also infusing the standards in my own curriculum. With using books such as "White Rabbit's Color Book," I can use the story and create a color mixing project inspired by the story.

This project is important to my students because they love to see how anything they do, including the very books they read, can inspire ideas for art.

Having a complete library in the art room will help to enhance their creative thinking and give chances to explore ideas when given a project objective.
