My students need pencils, rulers and markers for writing and drawing, light boxes to help trace patterns/templates for upcoming projects, content related texts to use when researching art processes and a paper cutter for class use.

My Students
After 16 years as an English teacher and Professional Developer, I started last November at a new school in a new content area. My new school is a medium sized high school in a large, underfunded urban district that serves a high poverty student population. Over the course of the school year, I will teach approximately 200 students in grades nine through 12.
I have less than a year’s experience in this new content area and am moving to a school that doesn’t have many existing resources for art instruction, so I need assistance in setting up a classroom that will provide a framework for student success.
I want to give my new students the classroom and materials they need in order to build their art and literacy skills as effectively as possible. We need as much help as possible to do the best work possible!
My Project
This coming fall I will start a new job teaching Fundamentals of Art and Mixed Media courses at a Baltimore City high school. I want to ensure I start out the year with everything my new students will need to be successful. Our school serves a high poverty population and is limited in resources for art. On average, my students will come to me with below grade level literacy skills and very limited knowledge of art. The best way to help them gain confidence as artists is to start with projects that ensure success for everyone. I am requesting books for our classroom library so that students can research art techniques they will be using, addressing literacy through art content. Light tables will help students succeed by allowing tracing for some of our initial work that will build confidence in their abilities as artists. Pencils and markers are basic tools that tend to get used up quickly in the art room and that are key to student work. Finally, the addition of a paper cutter to our classroom will help trim paper for various student projects and for mounting and displaying student work.
