Art and Culture: Africa and African American

My students need 20 books illustrating African and African American cultures, 4 CD's to offer insight to the importance of music in both cultures, 3 bins to keep everything safe and organized, and 1 idea book to inspire artwork from the books.

Opening a door to the world. I am the Art Teacher of a fantastic group of students in grade K-5. Our school houses 5 self-contained Exceptional Children classrooms who come to Art class once a week. We have a very diverse population culturally, as well as economically.

Last school year while studying masks of the world, I noticed the students were intrigued by how different the masks from each culture and time were. This has inspired me to focus on artwork from varied cultures this year. The students will be so excited and engaged to see more specific examples of artwork, stories, and music from African and African American cultures.

The African unit will be divided into 6 lessons which include: African Scavenger Hunt, What Does Africa Look Like, African Picture Books, Imagination Diary, African Masks and Carving, and Kente Cloth. In the African American unit students will study artists like Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence for inspiration in their own painting. Included in this unit will be quilting and other traditional African American arts. Each lessons builds upon the previous lesson, allowing the students to brainstorm, make observations, use their imagination, research, and create. The books and music are essential in effectively completing these lessons. Exposure to these cultures, music, and art has the power to make a difference in my students lives...and in the world those students will create.
