Help me give my students two digital microscopes, coloring books, marine animal wood cutouts, paint, brushes, paper, chalk, realistic fish models and more.
My marine biology students are fascinated by the ocean and all of the creatures that live within it. We have textbooks and will learn about the chemistry of the ocean and the ecosystems within. These studies will be much more meaningful if students can be creative with art projects based on the creatures and habitats we are studying.
As the ocean captures the imagination of my students, they will show their understanding as well as creativity through a variety of art projects.
Wood cutouts, paint and brushes will allow students to create life-like images of some marine creatures and take home their creations to share with family. Glow in the dark paint will be used on black card stock to color creatures of the deep sea who use luminescent light to see and communicate. These glowing creations will stand out on our classroom walls every time we turn the lights out.
Coloring books of marine life help to inspire students with their own drawings as well as allowing them a low stress activity of coloring after tests. Crepe paper will be used to make kelp forest and coral reef displays in the hallway outside our room. Small, clear bottles will be used with samples of sand from around the world. Students will use the two digital microscopes to look at sand closely and sketch what they see. They can also use the microscopes throughout the year to observe and sketch things like kelp samples and moss. Realistic model fish will be used for students to observe details of fish anatomy that are challenging to see when sketching small live fish.
My students are all taking marine biology as an elective because of their love of the ocean. They deserve a class with interactive activities that allow them to be creative.
