My Students

I teach a loving, energetic group of at-risk HS students at an urban Title I school in the heart of Manhattan. Many are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are safety transfer students who struggle because the education has failed to provide them with equal opportunities to succeed.

My students this year are either in a visual art class for the first time ever, or are students in a geometry and algebra course, all of which have been fully remote with me for over a year.

Through the challenges of remote learning, these students have stayed so positive, worked so hard, and are trying their best to appreciate school and take their education seriously.

This year is particularly challenging for many students as many of them fell ill during the spring and summer, had parents fall ill, and lost family members due to the virus. Not to mention, many had very difficult living situations that they have been coping with being quarantined in for the past few months. Despite these challenges though, my students have remained resilient and positive. They continue to exceed my expectations and make me proud.

My Project

Many of my students in both my visual arts courses and my geometry courses are English Language Learners or Students with Special Needs. Both of these populations, as well as many of my other students really benefit from visual representations to go along with lessons and instructions. I haven't been able to do my best job with these visual representations while we have been remote because I have only had access to my laptop with a mouse trackpad (which makes it very difficult to draw and write in a realistic manner).

This Apple Pencil will allow me to demonstrate annotating, note taking, and diagram drawing techniques for my geometry courses, while also allowing me to show my visual art students shading and drawing techniques that i have struggled to figure out how to demonstrate while being fully remote.

An apple pencil to go along with an iPad (from another project) would allow me to provide notes and annotating tips in my math classes, as well as drawing demos that are much more aligned with what would be happening if we were in person in our real classroom, and would elevate their understanding to a new level as many of them are visual learners.
