Art Advocacy in Our School

My students need bisque tiles, glazes, and 20 tile setters to complete this art advocacy project.

I am a middle school art teacher in an urban school in upstate New York. Part of our school design is to use expeditions to teach our students. Each expedition revolves around a topic that is used to teach all subject areas during the expedition months. We are beginning a 9th grade visual art based expedition next week. Art will be integrated into all subject areas more then usual and students will be able to see the value of art in everyday life. We will also use this expedition to advocate for art education. Art is such an important part of a child's education. It can prepare them for their future by helping them to become critical and analytical thinkers, persistent learners, and open to new experiences. In this time in our country when budgets are constantly being cut, art is suffering a great deal. For our final project in this art expedition I want each student to create their own ceramic tile that represents the experience they had living art. The tiles will become a permanent installation in our school. We need a bisque ceramic tile for each 9th grade student, glazes and tile setters for our kiln. This permanent installation will serve as both an art piece and an advocacy piece, reminding people that art is all around us. It is my goal to add to this installation every year so that our graduating 9th grade students can leave a piece of them behind. Your generosity will make it possible for our 9th graders to leave the legacy of their art work at our school. They will be able use the tiles to show what they have learned throughout the expedition and what art can be in their lives.
