This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are motivated by opportunities to use technology in the classroom. Our computers are dated. My students need to be able to use technology fluently in order to be successful in the future.
“Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow’s skills today.” – Jennifer Fleming
The students that I have the pleasure of teaching are eager and motivated to learn.
I am a 4th grade teacher for 45 high poverty students. I work in a Title I Renaissance school where over 90% of our students get free lunches and many families work very hard in the fields all day, every day to support their family! They come from very low income families where buying even the many necessities can be difficult and at times impossible. With trying to provide for their families, resources such as books, and even flashcards, must be passed over.
For many of my students, English is their second language and they are below level in reading and math and need extra support to help them make the necessary gains. My students come to school every day and work very hard every minute of the day. I want to provide my students with experiences they will need to be
My Project
Right now I have 3 computers in my classroom. They are unreliable and I have to have a Plan B for when they are not working as planned. Having 2 laptops would give students more opportunities to use programs that will help them become more fluent in math concepts and skills. In addition, they will be able to access websites to do research for our units of study in science. It is a powerful thing when students can take ownership for their learning. Many of my students struggle with reading. They love to read electronic books and have as many opportunities as possible to use the computers to read. These laptops would give more students access to the book sites we utilize and help motivate them to read more. By using these laptops, students are becoming more familiar with the technology they will encounter as they go through school and in their future careers,
Students are expected to take state assessments on computers in the 5th grade.
Our students don't have consistent access to computers to feel comfortable in taking these assessments. The more opportunities my students have to use relevant technology, the more prepared they will be for the future.
