Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Geography made me who I was," said Sue Monk Kidd in The Invention of Wings. If this is true for all of us, then my students need to understand geography. They need to put their hands on a globe and get a sense of the world where they live and where their parents and grandparents were born.

Our students attend a small, urban, well-loved public elementary school that has been in this community for many, many years.

More than 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. More than 82% are English Language Learners. Students come from other parts of the city to attend this Spanish bilingual school that has a vision of graduating students who are resilient, and culturally aware life-long learners. They are curious and aware of their world. We try to provide them with as much stimulation and hands-on experiences as we can. The latest budget cuts have left us with a skeletal crew of teachers, and money for only the most basic supplies.

My Project

Students want to know where places are that they read and hear about. If they read The Gold Cadillac, they want to know where Ohio and Mississippi are. If they read The Little Prince, they want to see where France is on a globe. If we're talking about the Middle East, they want to touch the globe and say, "I found Israel!" They want to see the places from where their ancestors came. We will use these globes to touch, to see other parts of the world. We will talk about latitude, longitude, the equator and draw our own maps of the world. We will open up a Physiographic Globe and see the earth's inner core, the outer core, and the mantle, and start to understand changes in the earth's surface. The students' perspectives will be broadened and enhanced.

Right now there are no globes in my classroom.

To teach about latitude, longitude, the equator, the continents, and the poles I rely on two dimensional maps. It's just not the same as looking at a globe. Each table of 4 or 5 students will have a globe to handle and look at close up. They will be able to touch the places where their parents or grandparents grew up. They will be able to see how far away Europe and China are and where the war in Iraq was fought. It will broaden their world view.
