Around the World in 80 Days-Fly Away on a Magic Carpet Ride
My students need a reading rug and books that celebrate the diverse cultures of our classroom.

My Students
"How come we have this stinky old rug Mrs. P?" This question was put to me on a sunny afternoon this spring. After years of providing little ones a comfortable place to rest, read, and re-group, our classroom carpet has seen better days. It's lumpy, bumpy, and seems to be flaking away day by day.
My students are a feisty, energetic, inquisitive group of second graders.
Our school is unique, catering to a wonderful group of immigrant and refugee families, most of whom have come to the United States within the last five years.
My students hail from 12 countries, speak more than 15 languages, and have varied life experiences that would fill a novel. They share one key element- in our classroom, they are a family: a listening, learning body of future leaders.
Our needs are great, and our supplies are low. Many of my students do not have additional resources at home to supplement their learning, and I believe that they deserve the best of everything! I've come to Donors Choose in the hopes of making their classroom a warm, inviting, and safe environment for all.
My Project
I'm requesting a rug called "Hands Around the World" which will be used for daily meetings, classroom councils, reading and center time, and for mapping our world. Students will use the built-in map during their study of geography, admire the diverse children around the outside during their study of immigration, and share the cultural stories requested with classmates daily.
Our rug is the center of our classroom. A visual oasis and comfortable meeting place, it has become a necessary tool and coveted reading nook in our second grade classroom. We read with big and little buddies on the rug, play math games, share author's circles and so so much more.
Right now, the rug we have is falling apart.
This new resource is one our school cannot afford to supply, but it would make an enormous difference to my students and to the quality of our story and sharing time!
Your donations will directly impact a very deserving group of amazing students from around the world. Please consider supporting learning in our urban classroom!
Thank you for your time!
