My Students
Thanks to the world of books as a teacher I'm able to flatten the globe and travel through stories. My students will most likely never leave Ohio, let alone the United States. The best way for them to travel and learn about other cultures is through books.
This is important for my students who are living in a culturally bland community.
We have very little diversity and this causes stereotypes to be their understanding of other cultures. I have had several conversations with students about the culturally insensitive language they use too often.
This year we will be reading our way "Around the World in 180 Days." My students need to learn about the people they do not see sitting in the desk next to them, but do see on television. We are not a very culturally diverse community so it's important that my students are exposed to cultures they may not experience until adulthood. Students need diverse books!
My Project
After reading a great professional development book on transforming classroom learning into dynamic learning experiences, I've come up with a plan to help enrich our reading experience for the school year. Our theme will be Around the World in 180 Days. Each quarter will have a travel destination theme. Quarter one will be a fantasy land, specifically the planets in A Wrinkle in Time, in order to focus on fiction and narrative writing. Quarter two we will travel through characters who emigrate to other countries, like those from the novel Refugee. Finally, in quarter three we will travel to Africa as Salva walks from Sudan to Kenya in A Long Walk to Water. This is why I would like to full class set of the novel.
A Long Walk to Water is the perfect novel to help students hone their skills in analyzing fictional elements, as well as, nonfiction text features.
The main character, Salva, is a living person who founded the charity Water for Sudan. I want to combine this novel with research projects on other charities so that students will be exposed to the opportunities and organization available to help around the world.
My students live in a culturally bland community and I have had several conversations this year about language that is culturally insensitive.
My co-teacher and I have a variety of reading levels in our classroom. In order to accommodate all of their independent reading levels, we need these diverse novel titles. Each of these titles takes place outside the United States. Some are fiction and some are nonfiction to appeal to more interests. The titles also span a variety of reading levels. All of these titles come highly recommended by other teachers and some have won awards. All are guaranteed to help!
