My Students
Being able to imagine a world beyond your community is often difficult for children in low income areas. Even being able to write about hopes and dreams for their future poses great challenges. Yet, literature can introduce them to worlds they never even knew existed and that is my goal.
My class consist of 22 students with at least 80% receiving free/reduced lunch students.
Often my students admit not having age appropriate books at home and rarely are they taken to the library. Most haven't been out of our state and have limited hopes and dreams for their future. They often have witnessed or been victims of some type of violence. Many receive little or no assistance with their homework, and only about half of their parents even come to pick up their report cards during conferences. Yet despite the challenges they face, they are eager to please when you show them that you care and want them to be more than what they see around them.
My Project
My students need more exposure to nonfiction literature to broaden not only their reading comprehension skills, but also broaden their awareness of the world around them. We also need the storage Center and Listening Center to complete the Reading Center. I love centers and so do my students. These materials will greatly help us to improve our center time. The listening center and the nonfiction leveled readers will allow them to work together in the small groups which help them get the additional help and practice applying and developing their reading comprehension skills. It will give me the opportunity to work with them in the small groups as well as modeling and reteaching areas of weakness in a less threatening environment.
I was not a lover of reading growing up because I read much slower than other students.
Yet I had a few good teachers went above and beyond to show me how the right book could change my whole outlook on life. Therefore, it has been my mission to be able to get that same "right," book in the hands of each of my students each year, that they too will not only appreciate the gift of reading, but to fall in love with all that curling up with the perfect book can offer.
