My Students
I teach at a small, rural K-2 school in Southwest Michigan. We are a Title 1 school, with many of our students receiving free lunch. We have a caring community that tries to do its best for our students.
Our school works hard to meet the needs of all our students, educationally and socially. I have a class full of inquisitive students who are eager to learn. I strive to create a safe, welcoming classroom where my students can grow and explore. However, like most teachers, I want to do more.
My Project
At this critical, often heartbreaking time in our world, I want better for my students. I want to instill in them the idea that each of them is important and who they are matters. I want them to “spread kindness like confetti” and show empathy toward others. I want to share with them the struggles that have gone on before them and that are still happening to make our country and world a better place. I want them to recognize the beauty in diversity and know that our differences are not all that different after all. I want to start by sharing these books with my students.
These books focus on a variety of topics: kindness, empathy, civil rights, self-expression, and more. I plan to share them as read aloud with my students to spark honest discussion and hopefully, inspiration.
