I need donations so that I can attend the Pathfinders - Maker Educator Collective Bootcamp to learn and apply computer science skills and foster a maker education mindset in our school.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 26 AMAZING inquisitive first graders who I provide a safe haven amidst one of the highest crime ridden neighborhoods in CA, but their neighborhood does not define them. Our school is a Title 1 school - all students qualify to receive free breakfast and lunch. They are challenged with economic hardship, yet it does not deter their hopes and dreams for a brighter future.
My students think and see themselves as engineers, architects, mathematicians, historians, scientists... Although their love for a certain discipline is ever evolving, their love for learning is constant and increases every time they can connect with a subject or lesson.
They enjoy hands-on experiences exploring through STEAM integrated lessons. My sweet little scholars come from loving homes who believe their child can succeed. Their parents strengthen and encourage the idea that education is the crux of a better life.
My Project
Arm me with the knowledge to implement what todays children need! Can you imagine a place where students of all ages come to one central location to create, tinker, invent, make, share, and actively learn through their own experiences? I can! Long ago were the days were teachers were afraid of relinquishing their authoritarian role. Today, teachers like me, want to be armed with the latest technology and resources to be able to implement exciting and innovating lessons. Today, students call for classrooms were teachers foster a maker mindset. Where students are allowed to rely on hands on, often collaborative learning experiences as a way to solve authentic problems. Problems that are meaningful for each individual student.
Arm me with the maker education principles and philosophies so that my little Ashlees and my little Veronicas will never EVER tell me that motors and robots are only for boys.
All children should have the ability to create, tinker, invent, make, and actively learn in a safe empowering, thriving learning environment. A place where students create something amazing out of nothing! A place where we celebrate failure! A place where students are learning by doing. A place to inspire students! A place to amplify their learning with technology and challenge them to be agents of their own learning. A place that eventually turns into a mindset.
I believe this is possible! Please help me learn about how to create this kind of place for my students. Help me get to the Pathfinders Summer Institute so that, in turn, my students have greater access into computer science and maker education spaces. I'm willing to spend my summer learning to bring relevant meaningful lessons to my students. Will you help me?
