My Students
My students are young women currently detained at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. My school is located inside the facility and serves the young men and women separately. The young women are intelligent, vibrant and curious. However, they are also experiencing detention. There is incredible diversity among the young women, diversity of education, experience, opinion, preferences, and socioeconomic status, but they have one thing in common.
They are all young and figuring out how to be female!
This means navigating personal hygiene and how we present ourselves to the world. There is a need for personal hygiene products that we can learn how to use so that when we are released from this situation and on our own we will have that knowledge in our back pocket.
My Project
Have you ever spent a lot of time with young women? They are as diverse as diverse can get in personality, opinion, goals, dreams, and pasts but they have in common that they will all come of age and experience menstruation.
Feminine hygiene products come in a dizzying range of products and options and it can get expensive trying to figure out what you need.
We don't want our girls to squander precious resources and purchase inappropriate items. We want to guide them through the process with conversations and samples. We need these products in our school pantry so we can guide our young students to identifying their needs and the products that meet their needs, as they mature into young women.
