My students need interactive literacy materials such as power pens, quiz cards, and word building magnets to play with parents in class.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach kindergarten to some of the hardest working 5- and 6-year-olds around! They love to learn and get their hands dirty. My students live in an extremely low income area which often limits their exposure to life experiences. Because of this, I try to bring as many real-life discoveries into our classroom that I can. My students take on every challenge head-on and would love to have a science-based classroom!
My students work really hard to achieve our classroom goals, I want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
That includes having materials to help engage families in our classroom to support student learning!
My Project
I would love to get materials to help students teach their parents in class and vice-versa. I live in a unique area in which many of my families' native language is NOT English. After meeting with each family at conferences I continued to express the dire need for parents to practice building and blending words with their students. I found that many family members did not know the English Alphabet let alone the corresponding letter sounds. This struck me like a bolt of lightning! After attending Joel's seminar I decided that the way in which I could engage families was in learning our kindergarten phonemic and phonics skills! I would like to request magnetic word building games to help both students and parents practice breaking apart and blending words. Also, I would like quiz cards ranging from early kindergarten to end of kindergarten literacy skills. I also would like to have the pens to help student and parents to explore sounds, quiz each other and hear proper pronunciation.
One day a month I will request for families to volunteer in class to play and learn the phonics and phonemic awareness games with their students.
This gives parents the chance to learn the Kindergartner's skills, to be able to support them at home. Also, parents would get to be a part of our classroom community and be able to contribute in a low stakes, high engagement activity! I know my students will build their confidence in these skills as they get to be the expert with their parents. Lastly, parents may even learn a thing or two about the English language and may even build their own literacy skills. I am really excited about this project and cannot wait to put my students in the educational driver's seat!
