My Students
Experiencing high school can evoke every emotion: fear or joy, angst or optimism, and sometimes all of these at once! Our classroom is a great place to begin learning about the outside world and how to be the best person possible in it. Each student is unique, from young athletes and artists to students with individual learning plans and young leaders. We're the fourth most diverse high school in the nation, and it shows in my classes!
My students are immersed in a journey that will culminate in college, leadership, citizenship, and life.
I want to prepare them to be the best readers they can possibly be, the kindest friends they wish they had, and heroes that their families and friends can be proud to know. High school can be difficult, but this is our chance to start on the right path. I want to recognize each student for their hard work during this difficult time.
My Project
When I return to my classroom to grade and plan for school reopening, I look at my classroom shelves. Are my students represented by the books in my classroom? Are their families on our shelves? If not, why not?
Today I am asking for novels to support military kids, young leaders, and sci-fi addicts.
I hope that seeing themselves reflected in our classroom will help them feel safe, important, and emboldened to learn. Classrooms should be welcoming spaces for all students, no matter their backgrounds or interests. Let's get them back and learning in a safe way soon.
