You can help my students become more independent readers with a listening center. We currently have one cassette/CD player with headphones. A 4-position listening center will allow more students to listen to a story while I conduct guided reading lessons.
Our public, elementary school is one of four in our small city.
Most of the students in our school come from low income families. I normally have 5 ESL students in my first grade class of 15 students. The listening center will be especially beneficial to the ESL students. The school's reading scores have been low for the last few years. Reading will be emphasized even more this school year.
My Project
The listening center will allow the students to be independent while I conduct guided reading groups. After listening to the selected story, one or two times, the students will complete a response journal. Having a cassette recorder, I would also be able to record directions for completing an assignment or small project, and have groups of four students listen and follow directions. Students will be trained to operate the player so they can use the center with no assistance from the other teacher or me.
You can help build a listening center that not only supports better reading habits, but encourages cooperation and independence.
I'm sure these students will appreciate your generosity as much as I do. Thank you in advance for your support.
