This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Play-Doh is an essential item in the early childhood classroom. Play-Doh has the ability to take on any shape and fill many roles in hands-on learning. It can be built into a bridge that holds blocks. It can be molded into a boat that floats on water. It can be made into numbers, animals, or whatever is at the center of your student's imagination. My classroom is a community of young people working together with their peers and teachers to succeed. We use a variety of methods to communicate with one another, including PECS, CORE Boards, Sign Language, AAC devices, Gestures, and Expressive language. We utilize music and movement to help reinforce instruction, as well as offer a creative outlet for students. We engage in a variety of hands-on activities in large and small group settings to give our students multiple opportunities to practice and solidify key foundational academic and interpersonal skills they will need to succeed in 1st Grade.

Play-Doh is a tool that not only strengthens fine motor skills, it allows students with fine motor disabilities to actively participate in the classroom in a meaningful way.

Fine motor ability is needed in many toys and learning tools created for early childhood classrooms. Play-Doh is a tool that is accessible to all students, no matter their level of fine motor mastery. It allows me, the teacher, flexibility in planning and to create meaningful access points for my students to the curriculum.
