FULLY FUNDED! Mr. H.'s classroom raised $17,521

I teach piano and keyboards at PS 2, a school in the poverty-stricken Morrisania section of the South Bronx. I have done so for about 11 years, and the children have had truly amazing success. Group lessons are provided to about 120 children daily, and individual coaching is provided to about 30 students weekly. The children have thrilled audiences with performances of masterpieces such as Bach's Preludes and Fugues, Beethoven's "Moonlight" and "Pathetique" Sonatas, Chopin's Etudes, and Mozart's "Turkish March". They frequently accompany professional singers performing opera, Broadway, and Gospel pieces. They also play at all assemblies and have consistently won competitions in our school district. Often, they go out into the community to spread joy to seniors and the sick. They do a truly fantastic job! Our children are stunning performers and have repeatedly been asked to play all over the city. They have even been flown to Hollywood to perform with professional entertainers. We are currently planning a modest tour of the southern United States. Over the years 17 of our students have gone on to conservatories such as Juilliard, Mannes, and Manhattan Schools of music. A far greater number have gone to local public high schools that specialize in music. Music is being used here to save children's lives!! For many years, students have been yearning for an opportunity to learn to play organ, which although similar in some ways, is actually VERY different than playing piano.
Recently, my students had the opportunity to visit a music school where the children receive organ lessons. What was stunning was that my students got the chance to actually sit down at the organ. I gave them 1 minute of instruction about the pedals and drawbars, and the students just took off!!! It was incredible. All the way home they begged for an organ for our school. That school is in a more affluent community than ours, so it was no problem for them to get an organ. Our school is severely under funded and operates on a very tight budget. Even though the children clearly deserve one, we cannot afford an organ. We are asking anyone to please help us get one.
