My Students

Are we going to dissect something this year, Mr. S?

In the age of budget cuts in urban schools, our students have been unfortunately losing out on many of the opportunities that we adults had during our high school experience.

In our Living Environment class, we do have a lab portion, however, our students rarely do anything very memorable. My students are ninth graders from a large public high school in New York City. Many of our students qualify for free lunch and travel far to come to our school which is one of the safer schools in the area. As a teacher, I try to give them memorable learning experiences in the science classroom and lab in order to keep their attendance up as well as turning them away from the idea that science is boring and impossible for them to master and enjoy.

My Project

I would like to provide my students with an opportunity to dissect large frogs. The most common question asked by students during our lab meetings is, "When are we going to dissect something?" There is something about dissecting an animal that has kids intrigued. I am all for it because I am able to incorporate many parts of the curriculum into this lab exercise. I have gotten Donorschoose grants in the past for frogs, and THE KIDS LOVED IT! I would like to order a large amount of 5"+ frogs that are in a safe non-toxic preservative. With these larger frogs, I feel there is a greater chance that their stomachs will be full of beetles and other insects allowing me to incorporate ecology as well as anatomy into the lab.

I believe that our students learn by doing.

Having this dissection experience will give our kids an experience that they will not forget any time soon. When they think back to high school, this will be one thing they will tell their families about.
