My Students
"Are we dissecting something this year?" This is the burning question asked by every middle school science student on the very first day of school. One of these days, I would love to answer "YES!" and keep them as excited as they are on the first day of school.
My students live in one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world and attend one of the largest public middle schools in the city.
Needless to say, students come from a wide range of cultural, religious, social, academic and economic backgrounds. The majority of students receive free or reduced lunch. In any given class, more than 5 languages can be spoken at home. Many students have parents who have immigrated to the US or are immigrants themselves. During parent-teacher conferences, a large number of students are the translators for their parents.
My Project
I am requesting classroom sets of fetal pigs that will be used in a dissection lab. The purpose of the lab is to help students identify the major anatomical and physiological features of the dissected fetal pig, which is similar in structure to the human anatomy. It will also help them understand the relationship between the structure and function of human and pig organs and organ systems. Not only will this lab be an exciting, hands-on experience for them, it will teach them to think critically, help them apply prior knowledge to a new situation and teach them the importance of following procedures carefully.
The middle school mind is very curious in nature.
It learns by doing, not seeing. It craves independence. It wants to "see it for itself." It is constantly looking for topics that peak its interest. It is very motivated, until it no longer feels inspired. Having the privilege of molding such a powerful tool, the middle school mind, I believe its my job to ensure that it continues on its course of curiosity and independence by keeping it engaged and inspired.
