My Students

I teach mostly West Indian students who come from immigrant families in Brooklyn, New York. the neighborhood I teach, Canarsie, is also the same neighborhood I grew up in. While our cultures may be different, I too grew up in a working class family.

My school is a title-1 school.

This means that most of my students qualify for free lunch. Our school goes from pre-k to grade 8, meaning that our students have been in the same school for 9 years!

We may live in a big city, but our school is a small family. There are only a couple of classes on each grade and the students remain very close with all of their teachers during these nine years. Like most urban communities, many of our students lack the opportunities and access to resources that children in wealthier suburban areas have. Our students are all eager to learn and participate in bigger projects. Working with these students has been the most rewarding thing I have done!

My Project

As as student, I learned best through differentiated instruction. Whenever I had the opportunity to discover a new or difficult concept through art, active learning or visual aids, I always performed better and gained a deeper understanding of the topic. Unfortunately, when I was a student, this was not a popular way to teach and differentiated instruction was not expected.

As an educator, I keep my personal experiences in mind whenever I plan lessons.

In order to keep my lessons engaging, while giving students who struggle every opportunity to learn a difficult concept, I need a variety of supplies on hand.

Whilst all of my students come to class with their hearts and minds ready to learn and achieve, they often come without basic supplies. A great mentor of mine once told me that finding supplies for each student is a waste of valuable learning time. I wish to create and environment where supplies are available to all students within an arms reach at all times so that they may benefit from my differentiated instruction. The markers, crayons and other supplies will be kept in box at every table group so student can work on group projects, foldables and publish finished work.

I have included one big ticket item on this year's list! A color printer that also connects wirelessly to a plethora of devices. My students who do not have computers at home often type papers on their phones. This will give them the ability to print inside my classroom! This item will round out a classroom ready for learning for everyone who enters!
