My students need 20 copies of the young adult fiction classic, "The Outsiders".
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Stuart's classroom raised $280
This project is fully funded
I teach eighth grade accelerated reading and writing. "Accelerated" means that my 75 students tend to have performed lowest in their grade last year on the standardized state test. I use a workshop approach to allow students daily time reading and writing--exactly what they need to become readers and writers.
Many of my students have never read a novel before. I spend 5-10 minutes per class reading aloud to them from The Outsiders, and then I set them loose on our classroom library. But lately, many students have been asking me, "Are there any more copies of The Outsiders?"
I need at least twenty copies of The Outsiders to put into the hands of the most interested students. As students finish the book, they will begin to see that reading can be relevant to them, that novels aren't out of their reach, and that the comparatively tiny reading selections on standardized tests are a cinch.
You can help put a book in the hands of eighth graders who are about to call it quits. And it won't just be any book -- it'll be a book that they've asked for, and that even now they are asking for.
