it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Most of the students we serve come from low-income homes and do not have exposure to the arts outside of school. Unfortunately, with few resources, even at school, experiences are few. So, when we got the opportunity to produce our first musical last year, we saw a great way to give our students and our school community an experience that they have never had before. This is our second year with Disney Musicals in Schools, thanks to the Center Theatre Group.
We want this year to be better than last year!
Disney Musicals in Schools has not only brought confidence to our students, it also enriches them culturally in the world of the arts, performing and visual. The students are getting a rich experience of how literature is introduced through songs, clever dialogue, and storytelling, taking reading to another level. Introducing theatrical literature stimulates and develops higher thinking, creativity, and the desire to explore more areas of literature. It builds a strong foundation to have students love to read, rather than have to read. The students are super excited to show everyone what they can do on April 12th!
My Project
Last year was our first production. What we did not anticipate was how poorly our sound system worked. We borrowed equipment from the local performing arts high school, but there were still issues with students being heard. We went to another school to see their production, and their state-of-the-art (at least as far as elementary schools go) sound system, along with headsets, made an extraordinary difference in terms of the performers’ ability to be heard well by the audience.
We need to be heard!
We would like to purchase new equipment, so that everyone can be heard better. As a school with a growing, sustainable musical theater program, we would like to invest in sound equipment that is commensurate with the hard work of our students and teacher team. We want a sound system for our kids to be heard well from the front to the very back of our auditorium.
