Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

April is Arab American Heritage Month here in Hayward Unified. We have an Ethnic Studies policy. The policy hopes to make sure students have a comprehensive view of history and become students of the world. The policy reads as follows: " Ethnic Studies is the interdisciplinary field that encompasses Africana/Black/African American Studies, American Indian/Alaskan Native/Native American/Indigenous Studies, Asian American Studies, Pacific Islander Studies, Arab American Studies, and Chicana/o/x and Latina/o/x Studies." As you can see, we have made a commitment district-wide to learn about Arab American Studies. April is the perfect month to look at the issues facing many Arab Americans and learn about all the different histories, cultures, and traditions. I have each of my students select a book they would like to bring into our classroom and school to help celebrate this month.

We have tried to include books that will teach us about different countries' histories, cultures, and traditions and tell stories our students can relate to their experiences.

The book "Nowhere Boy" talks about a boy my student's age having to flee Syria. "Other Words for Home," tells the story of Jude leaving her beloved older brother and father behind her, across the ocean in Syria, and starting a new life in Cincinnati. The Arabic Quilt: An Immigrant Story talks about immigration from Egypt to America. Stories like "Lailah's Lunchbox: A Ramadan Story" and "Amira's Picture Day" will help teach my class about holidays like EID and Ramadan. Another way to teach students about different cultures is through food, so I have included books like "Arab Fairy Tale Feasts: A Literary Cookbook". I have also included books on many different countries so my students can learn about the countries' histories and traditions. We have used the Unbelievable Pictures and Facts About series before!
